The Imiter mine, located in the Jbel Saghro massif of the eastern Anti-Atlas mountains in Morocco, is a major epithermal silver deposit. Geologically, the mineralization is hosted within Neoproterozoic-aged black shales, siltstones, and volcanic tuffs of the Cryogenian to Ediacaran periods. The deposit consists of high-grade polymetallic veins structured by regional fault systems, where low-temperature hydrothermal fluids precipitated native silver, mercury-rich silver amalgams, acanthite, proustite, and pyrargyrite within quartz and dolomite matrices. While historical records indicate primitive surface extraction occurred at the site during the Islamic Golden Age as early as the eighth century, modern industrial development commenced in 1969 with the formation of the Societe Metallurgique d'Imiter. Large-scale commercial underground and open-pit mining operations began in earnest in 1978, and the mine continues continuous production of high-grade silver bullion well into the twenty-first century.
