Acanthite with Chalcopyrite (AG-007)

specimen number:
9273218

location:
La Sirena Mine, Guanajuato, Mexico

description:

Bright lustrous crystal cluster of acanthite, the largest crystals measuring to 0.5 cm in size with crystallized pyrite. In super condition all around and no points of attachment.

The La Sirena mine, located within the historic Guanajuato mining district in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, is a notable underground silver and gold operation that exploited the deep extensions of the prolific Veta Madre (Mother Lode) system. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within a major structural fault zone where Oligocene-age volcanic rocks and underlying Mesozoic sedimentary formations are cut by epithermal, low-to-intermediate sulfidation veins. Hydrothermal fluids circulating through these open fractures precipitated thick bands of quartz, calcite, and adularia rich in precious metals, with primary mineralization consisting of acanthite, aguilarite, electrum, and various silver sulfosalts alongside base metal sulfides. Historically, mining along this section of the Veta Madre dates back to Spanish colonial prospecting in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but modern mechanized underground development at La Sirena expanded significantly during the mid-to-late twentieth century under various private operators and local cooperatives. The mine underwent extensive rehabilitation and systematic production phases under international corporate owners, including Great Panther Silver, which operated the property as part of its core Guanajuato Mine Complex from 2005 until operational suspensions and transitions occurred in the early 2020s, leaving the deep workings a subject of ongoing geological evaluation and regional asset management through 2026.
