Adamite

specimen number:
2072033

location:
Ojuela Mine, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico

description:
Lustrous crystals of adamite measuring to 0.5 cm in size throughout matrix. In good condition with minimal micro-damage present.

The Ojuela Mine, located near Mapimi in Durango, Mexico, is a historic polymetallic deposit that was worked from the 17th century through the early 20th century for lead, silver, and zinc. The deposit consists of hydrothermal vein and replacement mineralization hosted in limestone, where metal rich fluids deposited sulfide minerals in fractures and cavities. Over time, extensive underground workings were developed, and the oxidized zones of the deposit became especially rich in secondary minerals. Among the most notable is adamite, a zinc arsenate mineral that occurs as well formed crystals in shades of green, yellow, and colorless, often forming radiating clusters and coatings on matrix. These specimens formed through the alteration of primary zinc minerals under near surface conditions, and the Ojuela Mine is considered one of the classic localities for adamite due to the quality and diversity of its crystal forms.
