Classic specimen from Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, a solid mass of metallic alogodonite. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and would date to the very early 20th century. Algodonite is a copper arsenide mineral that typically forms in hydrothermal vein deposits rich in copper and arsenic. It was first described in the 19th century from the Algodones mining district in Chile, from which it takes its name. The mineral usually occurs as metallic gray to silver white masses or granular aggregates and may tarnish on exposure. Algodonite is commonly associated with other copper arsenide minerals such as domeykite and native copper in reduced environments. Although not a major ore mineral, it is of interest to collectors and mineralogists because of its composition and occurrence in classic copper districts.
