The Llano County mining district, situated within the central uplift region of Texas, was a historically significant and mineralogically diverse producer of iron, rare earths, and industrial granite. Geologically, the district is centered on the Llano Uplift, a major structural dome where Precambrian-age metamorphic and igneous basement rocks, such as the Packsaddle Schist, Valley Spring Gneiss, and various Town Mountain Granite plutons, were exposed by the erosion of overlying Paleozoic strata. Hydrothermal and pegmatitic activity within these ancient, deeply buried Precambrian complexes concentrated distinct ore bodies, including massive, stratabound lenses of magnetite iron ore at the Iron Mountain deposit, alongside complex pegmatite dikes rich in rare minerals like gadolinite, yttrialite, and Allanite at the famous Baringer Hill site. Historically, localized surface quarrying of stone and small-scale prospecting for silver and iron began in the mid-nineteenth century, but systematic industrial development accelerated in the late 1880s and early 1890s, driven by the expansion of regional railroads and corporate investments in iron and rare-earth extraction. The Baringer Hill pegmatite mine operated commercially from 1887 until 1907 to supply outer-space and lighting manufacturing technologies with thoria and yttria, before the entire site was permanently flooded beneath Lake Buchanan in 1937. Commercial underground shaft mining and open-cut quarrying for iron and specialized minerals continued intermittently through the early to mid-twentieth century, with major corporate metal extraction operations contracting significantly after World War II and largely ceasing by the 1950s, leaving high-purity architectural granite quarrying as the primary active extractive industry in the county through 2026.
