The River Valley area in the Sudbury District of Ontario, Canada, is widely known in the mining sector for the large-scale River Valley Palladium Project, an undeveloped platinum group metals deposit acquired and explored actively since the late 1990s. Geologically, the region features the Paleoproterozoic River Valley Intrusion, a layered mafic body emplaced into older Archean gneisses and rocks along the Grenville Front. Regionally and locally, the metamorphic host rocks associated with these intrusive and regional tectonic events also create favorable conditions for accessory mineral formation, famously producing exceptional specimens of almandine garnet, often found as lustrous wine-red crystals embedded in black biotite mica matrices within Dana Township.
