Almandine

specimen number:
1605129

location:
Midongy Atsimo, Atsimo-Atsinanana, Madagascar

description:
An attractive lustrous deep red slightly translucent crystal of almandine 1.2 cm in diameter on matrix. In great condition.

Midongy Atsimo, located in the Atsimo-Atsinanana region of southeastern Madagascar, is situated within a remote and rugged area historically inhabited by local agricultural communities. While the surrounding district does not function as an active commercial mining town, the broader area gained institutional protection with the establishment of the initial reserve status in 1953, which was later formally designated as the Midongy du Sud National Park in 1997. Geologically, the region lies along Madagascar's dramatic southeastern escarpment where ancient Precambrian basement rocks, consisting primarily of crystalline gneisses, migmatites, and quartzites of the central highlands, plunge steeply toward the coastal plain.
