The Granatenkogel north slope, situated near Obergurgl in the Oetz Valley of Tyrol, Austria, is not an industrial mining district with formal commercial opening and closing dates, but rather a renowned alpine mineral locality known for high-grade crystal collecting. Geologically, the area is part of the Oetztal-Stubai Crystalline Complex within the Austroalpine basements, consisting predominantly of high-grade metamorphic rocks such as micaschists, gneisses, and amphibolites. The site is famous for its alpine fissures and pegmatitic veins where remarkable mineral specimens, most notably large crystals of almandine garnet and associated accessory phases, formed under intense pressure and temperature during regional orogenic and hydrothermal events.
