Two very attractive pieces of polished amber. The specimens come with an antique label box as shown. These date to the 19th century. The size provided is the size of the label box.

Baltic amber is fossilized plant resin originating from Eocene-aged coniferous forests, deposited approximately thirty-five to forty-five million years ago. Geologically, these organic deposits became concentrated within a glauconite-rich, marine sedimentary stratum known as the blue earth layer, found along the coasts of the Baltic Sea. For centuries, extraction was limited to beachcombing and diving to recover pieces eroded by wave action. Industrial open-pit mining and mechanical dredging began in the 1870s, notably near Palmnicken under the enterprise of Stantien and Becker. These quarrying operations extracted volumes of amber-bearing sediment, establishing an industry that transitioned through state and corporate ownership structures and continues production into the twenty-first century.
