Stanley Butte, located in Graham County, Arizona, within the San Carlos Indian Reservation, is a premier locality for high-quality andradite garnets. Geologically, the site is a classic skarn deposit formed at the contact zone between Paleozoic limestones and Laramide-aged granitic intrusions. The introduction of iron-rich hydrothermal fluids into the carbonate rocks resulted in the formation of vibrant green to yellowish-brown andradite crystals, including the prized variety known as demantoid, which often exhibit brilliant luster and sharp dodecahedral forms. Historically, the locality was discovered in the early 20th century, with the most significant specimen mining occurring sporadically from the 1950s through the 1990s. Access to the site is strictly regulated by tribal authorities, making specimens from this area highly sought after by collectors. The garnets from Stanley Butte are often found on a matrix of crystallized hedenbergite or magnetite, representing a complex mineralogical environment that remains a hallmark of Arizona geology.
