The Kara Mines, located near Hampshire south of Burnie in northwestern Tasmania, Australia, comprise a series of significant mineralized skarn deposits with modern commercial operations beginning in the late 1970s. Geologically, the deposits formed where the late Devonian Housetop Granite intruded into older calcareous sedimentary sequences, specifically the Ordovician Gordon Limestone, creating high-temperature contact metamorphic skarn zones rich in calcic silicates. Mineralogically, the site is dominated by massive magnetite and scheelite, and it has gained international renown among mineral collectors for producing exceptional, sharp crystals of andradite garnet, vesuvianite, and a variety of rare secondary tungsten species.
