The Erupcion mine, located in the Los Lamentos Mountains of Chihuahua, Mexico, is a historic underground lead-zinc-silver operation famous for its exceptional mineral specimens. Geologically, the deposit is a highly oxidized carbonate replacement or manto-type system hosted within thick sequences of Cretaceous limestone. Intense supergene alteration of primary sulfide ores under highly oxidizing conditions led to the formation of extensive secondary mineral suites, most notably spectacular tabular crystals of wulfenite associated with vanadinite. Formal commercial mining on the property began in earnest around 1915 and expanded significantly during the 1920s under the Erupcion Mining Company. High-grade lead and silver ores were aggressively extracted through tunnels and shafts until the primary economic reserves were exhausted, leading to the cessation of large-scale commercial operations around 1931, though the locality has seen intermittent specimen mining since.
