description: Labradorite from the coast of Labrador, Canada, is a famous plagioclase feldspar mineral primarily found within the Nain Plutonic Suite. Geologically, it occurs in massive anorthosite rock formations that crystallized from magma deep within the Earth's crust about 1.3 billion years ago. The mineral is world-renowned for its spectacular optical effect known as labradorescence, which is caused by the diffraction of light within microscopic, alternating layers of different feldspar compositions. This phenomenon creates vibrant flashes of peacock blue, gold, and green across the surface of the stone when viewed from certain angles. Historically, the mineral was first identified by Moravian missionaries in 1770 on Paul's Island near the town of Nain, and it has since become the official mineral emblem of Newfoundland and Labrador. While labradorite is found in other parts of the world, the original Canadian locality remains the classic source for specimens that exhibit the most intense and diverse spectrum of colors.
Interesting historical specimen for this material. A mass of what is often called labradorite, this cut and polished on one face. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video. At one time this was part of the collection of German collector Wilhelm Hoyer, this dates to the middle or latter part of the 19th century.
