description: The Styrian Erzberg, situated near the town of Eisenerz in Styria, Austria, represents one of the largest and most historic open-cut iron ore operations in Europe. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within the Palaeozoic-age greywacke zone of the Eastern Alps, where a massive, stratified replacement body formed as iron-rich hydrothermal fluids interacted with Devonian-age limestone and dolomite strata. This geological process converted the original carbonate rock into extensive beds of siderite (iron carbonate) and ankerite, creating a unique, terraced mountain of ore that contains minor amounts of hematite, pyrite, and exceptionally well-crystallized secondary aragonite (famously known as flos ferri). Historically, open-cut quarrying and rudimentary surface mining for iron at the site date back to the Roman Empire and the early Middle Ages, around the eighth and ninth centuries, providing the raw material that established the regional iron road industry. Organized, industrial-scale corporate extraction accelerated rapidly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to supply the heavy industrial steel mills of Central Europe, transforming the entire mountain into a spectacular sequence of giant open-pit steps. While underground mining operations at the site were permanently phased out in 1986 due to economic shifts, highly mechanized large-scale surface quarrying continues to actively extract millions of tons of iron ore annually, with stable corporate operations scheduled to sustain industrial production well beyond 2026. Wilhelm Hoyer was a notable nineteenth-century German engineer, educator, and avid mineral collector based in Hannover who compiled a highly systematic regional and international mineral collection. Geologically, Hoyer focused his personal collecting efforts on the diverse sedimentary, evaporite, and hydrothermal ore deposits of Lower Saxony and the Harz Mountains, amassing carefully documented representative suites of calcite, fluorite, gypsum, and various base-metal sulfides. Historically, his active collecting period spanned the mid-to-late 1800s while he served as a professor of mechanical engineering at the Technische Hochschule Hannover, during which time he maintained active exchanges with leading German mineralogists and commercial dealers to expand his cabinet. Following his death, his curated collection of several thousand meticulously labeled specimens was preserved intact when it was acquired by the major regional natural history museum in Hannover in the late nineteenth century, providing modern researchers with a clean historical record of European mineral localities before many of those historic localities were permanently closed or lost.
Classic old time Austrian specimen with stalactitic snow white crystallized aragonite across the top of matrix. These are often referred to as flos-ferri. This one is in good condition. At one time part of the collection of Wilhelm Hoyer, this dates to the 19th century. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video.
