The Rodna Mine is situated in the Rodna Mountains area (historically overlapping Bistrita-Nasuad and Maramures regions) in northern Romania. Geologically, the deposit consists of polymetallic skarn and replacement-style ore bodies containing significant lead, zinc, copper, silver, and pyrite mineralization, formed via complex interactions between Neogene magmatic intrusions and older metamorphic or sedimentary sequences. Historically, it is one of the oldest recorded mining sites in medieval Transylvania, with silver and base metal extraction documented as early as the 13th century (first explicitly mentioned in 1235) and expanding through subsequent centuries. While operations experienced multiple phases of revival, nationalization, and modernization through the centuries, large-scale industrial underground mining eventually ceased around the turn of the 21st century due to economic restructuring.
