description: The Southwest Mine, situated in the Warren District of Bisbee, Arizona, was a notable operation located on the southern slopes of the Mule Mountains near the famous Copper Queen Mine. Geologically, the mine exploited rich oxidized ore bodies and secondary carbonate deposits hosted within the Paleozoic Escabrosa and Martin limestones. These minerals were formed by the hydrothermal alteration and subsequent weathering of the Sacramento Hill porphyry system, resulting in spectacular specimens of azurite, malachite, and cuprite. Historically, the Southwest Mine began significant production in the late 1880s under the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company. It was known for producing high-grade copper ore from relatively shallow underground workings compared to the deeper shafts of the eastern district. While the most intensive period of mining occurred between 1890 and 1910, sporadic leasing and small-scale operations continued into the mid-20th century.
Attractive sparkling acicular sky-blue crystals of aurichalcite which throughout this matrix with flattened rhombohedral colorless crystals of calcite. In great condition.
