location:
Bisbee, Cochise Co., Arizona, USA

description:
Attractive blue acicular aurichalcite throughout matrix with minor calcite. Minor damage present as seen.

The Warren Mining District, centered around the town of Bisbee in Cochise County, Arizona, was one of the most prolific and historically significant copper-producing regions in North America, encompassing extensive underground workings and massive open-pit operations. Geologically, the district is situated within a highly fractured and faulted terrain where Paleozoic carbonate sedimentary rocks, notably the Martin and Escabrosa limestones, were intruded by the Jurassic-age Sacramento Hill porphyry stock. Hydrothermal fluids associated with this igneous activity generated vast copper-bearing porphyry deposits and massive sulfide replacement bodies, which later underwent intense supergene oxidation to create world-famous zones rich in colorful secondary minerals like malachite, azurite, cuprite, and native copper. Historically, the initial mineral discoveries were made by military scouts and prospectors in 1877, leading to the formation of the landmark Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company, which along with the Calumet and Arizona Mining Company, systematically developed the district into a world-class industrial hub. Heavy production dominated the region for nearly a century through famous underground shafts like the Campbell, Cole, and Dallas, alongside the massive open-pit extraction at the Sacramento Pit and the later Lavender Pit, which opened in 1954. Changing economic conditions, declining ore grades, and rising operational costs eventually led to the systematic winding down of industrial operations by Phelps Dodge Corporation, culminating in the permanent cessation of all open-pit and underground commercial mining in 1975.
