Axinite-Fe
specimen number:
2133096
location:
Bourg d'Oisans, Isere, France
description: Axinite from Bourg d Oisans in Isere, France, is a classic example of Alpine mineralization formed in fractures within metamorphic rocks of the French Alps. The crystals developed from hydrothermal fluids during mountain building processes and are typically sharp and well formed. Axinite from this locality commonly occurs as wedge shaped crystals with brown to violet brown color and vitreous luster. Specimens are highly valued by collectors for their crystal form and association with other Alpine minerals such as quartz, epidote, and chlorite. William Theodore Roepper was the first professor of mineralogy and geology at Lehigh University beginning in 1866, and he also served as curator of the universitys early museum collections.
Glassy partly gemmy crystals of axinite measuring to 1.2 cm in size across the top of matrix. In good condition with very minimal micro-damage present. Quite nice for this old French classic. The specimen comes with a previous label from the Roepper collection at Lehigh University as shown at the end of the video.
Size: 8.5 x 5.0 x 4.0 cm (small-cabinet)
