The Morenci mine, situated in Greenlee County, Arizona, United States, is a monumental open-pit copper operation that ranks as one of the largest and most productive industrial mining complexes in the world. Geologically, this immense deposit is a classic porphyry copper system associated with early Tertiary-age granitic, monzonitic, and dioritic porphyry stocks that intruded into Paleozoic carbonate sequences and Precambrian basement granites. Intense hydrothermal alteration and structural fracturing shattered the host rocks, depositing extensive network veinlets of chalcopyrite, pyrite, and bornite, which later underwent a critical secondary supergene enrichment phase where downward-percolating groundwater oxidized the upper zone and concentrated a massive, near-surface blanket of high-grade chalcocite, covellite, and brilliant green chrysocolla and malachite. Historically, the rich outcroppings were discovered around 1865 by volunteer cavalry scouts, leading to the initiation of formal small-scale underground mining and smelting by the Longfellow Copper Mining Company around 1872. The property was significantly expanded by the Detroit Copper Mining Company and the legendary Arizona Copper Company, which transitioned the facility from labor-intensive underground stoping to massive open-pit extraction methods at the historic Clay Orebody in 1937 under the corporate ownership of Phelps Dodge. Through 2026, under the modern ownership and management of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., the Morenci open pit has operated continuously for over a century and a half, pioneering large-scale solvent extraction-electrowinning technology to process billions of tons of ore and remaining an active, foundational benchmark for global copper production.
