The Pinto Valley Mine, located in the historic Globe-Miami mining district of Gila County, Arizona, is a major open-pit operation with a long history of copper production dating back to its initial development and subsequent commercial startup in the 1970s. Geologically, the deposit is a classic porphyry copper system hosted primarily within the Precambrian-aged Lost Gulch Quartz Monzonite. Economic hypogene mineralization consists largely of disseminated and fracture-filling chalcopyrite and pyrite, accompanied by minor molybdenite. Hydrothermal alteration and subsequent weathering processes have shaped this extensive orebody, making it one of the enduring cornerstone copper producers in the southwestern United States.
