Azurite with Malachite (1595)
specimen number:
9771014
location:
Milpillas Mine, Cuitaca, Sonora, Mexico
description:
A single crystal of electric blue azurite. The electric blue color is due to an overgrowth of chatoyant malachite on the original azurite and then a thin layer of azurite over that. Light penetrates the thin overgrowth, is reflected chatoyantly off the malachite and comes back through the overgrowth. The overgrowth is not complete and several small patches of malachite are still visible on the crystal.
Size: 3.2 x 1.8 x 1.8 cm (miniature)
