The Liufengshan mine, located in the Guichi District of Chizhou within Anhui Province, China, was a specialized, localized mining operation famous for producing exceptional, highly lustrous crystal specimens of secondary copper minerals like azurite and malachite. Geologically, the site sits within the prominent Middle-Lower Yangtze River Metallogenic Belt, where Mesozoic intrusive magmas penetrated Paleozoic carbonate sedimentary sequences, forming complex skarn-type and hydrothermal replacement deposits rich in copper and other base metals. The highly prized mineral pockets formed within the supergene oxidation zones of these deposits, where meteoric waters concentrated copper into deep blue azurite crystal clusters and fibrous malachite aggregates along weathered fractures. Organized corporate mining and extraction at the site occurred primarily during the late twentieth century, with formal operations concluding as localized reserves were depleted. However, intermittent surface salvage, small-scale quarrying, and dedicated specimen mining have continued sporadically to supply the international collector market.
