The Qiaojia area, located in the Yunnan Province of China, is the premier global locality for the rare mineral babingtonite in association with prehnite and quartz. Geologically, these specimens are found within the massive Emeishan Large Igneous Province, which consists of extensive Permian-aged basaltic lava flows. Approximately 250 to 260 million years ago, as these basaltic rocks cooled, hydrothermal fluids circulated through open gas vesicles and fractures, depositing a distinct sequence of secondary silicate minerals. This unique chemical environment allowed for the growth of sharp, jet-black, and highly lustrous triclinic crystals of babingtonite, which is a calcium iron manganese silicate.

Historically, the Qiaojia babingtonite specimens began appearing on the international mineral market in the early 2000s, instantly redefining the standards for the species. Before this discovery, babingtonite was typically found only as small or dull crystals, but the Yunnan finds featured large, aesthetic sprays of black crystals often perched on contrasting "grape-like" mounds of light-green prehnite. The most famous examples from this rugged mountain region also include sparkling colorless quartz points, creating a three-mineral combination that is considered a masterpiece of Chinese mineralogy. Today, the Qiaojia County specimens remain highly sought after by collectors worldwide for their exceptional crystal size, brilliant luster, and the striking visual contrast between the deep black babingtonite and vibrant green prehnite.
