The Stoneham locality, situated in northeast Weld County, Colorado, is a world-renowned mineral site famous for producing highly distinctive, gem-quality blue barite crystals. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within the Oligocene-aged White River Formation, which consists of poorly consolidated, fine-grained tuffaceous sandstones and siltstones derived from ancient volcanic ash falls. The barite crystals formed at low temperatures when barium-rich meteoric groundwaters circulated through the sedimentary layers, precipitating the mineral inside localized clay-lined pockets, fractures, and organic cavities. While the area has never hosted large-scale industrial metal or quarry operations, specialized specimen mining and surface digging began in the late nineteenth century and has been conducted intermittently by private collectors, mineral dealers, and institutions for over a century. Digging activities continue on a seasonal basis under strict claim-holder management, with the locality remaining a classic active source for sharp, elongated, prismatic blue barite specimens.
