description: The Pallaflat mine, situated near Bigrigg in the West Cumbria iron ore district of England, was a highly celebrated producer of exceptionally pure hematite and world-class mineral specimens. Geologically, the deposit consists of irregular replacement bodies, flats, and fault-controlled veins hosted within the Carboniferous-age Seventh Limestone formation, which is truncated by major regional faults and overlain by younger sedimentary strata. Upward-migrating, iron-rich basinal brines selectively dissolved the limestone along structural weaknesses, precipitating dense, high-grade kidney ore hematite and leaving large open solution cavities where spectacular, lustrous crystals of calcite, baryte, and clear quartz (locally called rock crystal) could freely develop. Historically, while localized shallow iron extraction occurred in the vicinity for generations, large-scale industrial underground shaft mining at Pallaflat began in 1874 under the Pallaflat Mining Company. The operation quickly expanded into a major corporate enterprise, employing advanced pumping and haulage systems to extract thousands of tons of premium low-phosphorus ore annually to supply the booming regional Bessemer steel industry. Following decades of intense production, the primary high-grade ore bodies faced eventual exhaustion and increasingly challenging underground water conditions, leading to a steady contraction of work and the permanent cessation of all commercial mining operations at the Pallaflat property in 1914. Wilhelm Hoyer was a notable nineteenth-century German engineer, educator, and avid mineral collector based in Hannover who compiled a highly systematic regional and international mineral collection. Geologically, Hoyer focused his personal collecting efforts on the diverse sedimentary, evaporite, and hydrothermal ore deposits of Lower Saxony and the Harz Mountains, amassing carefully documented representative suites of calcite, fluorite, gypsum, and various base-metal sulfides. Historically, his active collecting period spanned the mid-to-late 1800s while he served as a professor of mechanical engineering at the Technische Hochschule Hannover, during which time he maintained active exchanges with leading German mineralogists and commercial dealers to expand his cabinet. Following his death, his curated collection of several thousand meticulously labeled specimens was preserved intact when it was acquired by the major regional natural history museum in Hannover in the late nineteenth century, providing modern researchers with a clean historical record of European mineral localities before many of those historic localities were permanently closed or lost.
Classic British combination specimen with light blue transparent lustrous tabular crystals of barite to 4.5 cm in size across the top of matrix and partially coated with colorless scalenohedral crystals of calcite. Typical of these some cleaving present, this one is still in good condition. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video. At one time the specimen was part of the collection of Wilhelm Hoyer and would date to the 19th century.
