Barite with Calcite

specimen number:
1605087

location:
Myers, Treasure Co., Montana, USA

description:
Attractive thumbnail with a gemmy amber colored crystal of barite hosting yellow crystals of rhombohedral calcite. This is in good condition all around.

Myers, a small historic railroad and agricultural community located along the Yellowstone River in Treasure County, Montana, has a regional history tied to late 19th-century westward expansion and the development of the Northern Pacific Railway. Geologically, the surrounding area consists of sedimentary strata, including extensive Cretaceous shales and sandstones typical of the Montana plains, through which localized mineralizing solutions have occasionally moved. Mineralogically, the locality is celebrated among collectors for producing exceptional specimens of barite, particularly sharp, transparent to translucent golden or amber crystals with complex terminations that formed within local sedimentary or vein environments.
