Rounded crystallized barite to 1.0 cm in diameter across the front of a crystallized quartz and hematite rich matrix. In good condition. Collected in March, 1994.

The Republic Mine, located in Marquette County, Michigan, was one of the major iron mines in the western part of the Marquette Iron Range. Mining activity in the area began in the mid 19th century, with the Republic Mine becoming a significant producer of iron ore by the late 1800s. Operated by several companies over time, including the Republic Iron Company, the mine developed extensive underground workings and later open pit operations as mining methods evolved. The town of Republic grew alongside the mine, supported by the industry and its workforce. Production continued into the 20th century, contributing to Michigan's role as a leading iron ore supplier in the United States. However, as high grade ore became depleted and economic conditions changed, operations eventually declined and ceased. Today, the site stands as part of the historic legacy of iron mining in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
