Barite with Stibnite

specimen number:
1052641

location:
Baia Sprie, Maramures Co., Romania

description:
Blocky yellowish crystals of barite measuring to 4.0 cm in size across the top of a thick cluster of metallic stibnite crystals. Minimal damage present, this still quite good. Previously from the collection of Wilhelm Hoyer, this piece dates to the 19th century. An antique label comes with the piece as shown at the end of the video.

The town of Baia Sprie, historically known by the Hungarian name Felsobanya, is located in the Maramures region of northern Romania and represents one of the most significant hydrothermal ore deposits in the Carpathian Mountains. Geologically, the area is situated within the Neogene-age volcanic arc, where base metal mineralization occurred in the form of extensive epithermal veins cutting through andesitic and dacitic host rocks. These veins are world-renowned for their complex mineralogy, producing exceptional specimens of stibnite, barite, and various silver-lead-zinc sulfides within a gangue of quartz and calcite. Historically, mining and quarrying at Felsobanya have a long and storied past, with gold and silver extraction documented as early as the 14th century under the Hungarian crown. Intensive industrial operations reached their zenith during the 19th and early 20th centuries, when the site became a major center for the Austro-Hungarian mining industry. Although many of the large-scale state-run mining operations officially ceased in the early 2000s, the locality remains a cornerstone of European mineralogy.

Wilhelm Hoyer (1849-1913) was a prominent German engineer and mineral collector based in Hanover, whose professional work in railway construction and geology facilitated the assembly of a significant mineralogical collection. Geologically, Hoyer was noted for his deep expertise in the Mesozoic formations of northwestern Germany, particularly the Hildesheim area, where he meticulously documented and collected specimens from active quarries and construction sites. His collection was scientifically important for its comprehensive representation of regional minerals and fossils, reflecting the systematic approach of 19th-century European collectors who bridged the gap between industrial mining and academic mineralogy. Historically, Hoyer was active in the latter half of the 1800s and early 1900s, contributing numerous papers to geological societies and maintaining professional ties with major institutions of his era. Following his death, his extensive mineralogical and paleontological holdings were integrated into the collections of the University of Gottingen and the Prussian Geological Survey in Berlin, where they continue to serve as vital reference materials for researchers through 2026.
