Non-terminated green prismatic opaque semi lustrous crystal of beryl 1.5 cm in length on matrix. This is the variety often referred to as emerald. The specimen comes with a previous collection data card with an acquisition date of 1969. This is shown at the end of the video.

Colombia is the world's most significant source of high-quality emeralds, with major mining districts located in the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes. Geologically, these deposits are unique because they are hosted in black carbonaceous shales and limestones rather than igneous rocks, with emeralds forming through hydrothermal processes at relatively low temperatures. This specific environment allows for the formation of vibrant green beryl crystals colored primarily by chromium and vanadium. Historically, emerald mining in the region predates the Spanish arrival, as indigenous groups like the Muzo and Chibcha had been extracting stones for centuries. Following the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, the mines at Muzo (opened 1564) and Chivor were formalized, establishing a global trade that has lasted for over 450 years. While small-scale and state-run quarrying were the norm for much of its history, modern operations have transitioned toward high-tech underground mining through 2026 to reach deeper, richer veins. Today, Colombian emeralds remain the global benchmark for color and clarity, maintaining a legacy that spans from pre-Columbian tradition to the forefront of the international gemstone market.
