The Huya Mine, located in the Mount Xuebaoding area of Pingwu County in Sichuan Province, China, is a high-altitude hydrothermal vein deposit situated within the Longmen Mountain range. Geologically, the mineralization is associated with the intrusion of a small leucogranite body into Devonian sedimentary rocks, where the cooling of volatile-rich fluids led to the formation of flat, open-space pockets. The site is world-famous for its unique beryl crystals, variety goshenite or aquamarine, which occur as exceptionally lustrous, gemmy, and pale blue tabular prisms rather than the typical elongated hexagonal columns found elsewhere. These crystals are frequently found in aesthetic association with orange-red scheelite, pink fluorite, and muscovite. Historically, mining and quarrying activities in the Huya and Xuebaoding region intensified in the late 1980s and 1990s as the area became recognized for its world-class mineral specimens. While large-scale industrial mining is limited by the extreme alpine terrain, local small-scale extraction has remained a primary source of these distinct tabular beryls for several decades. As of 2026, the Huya Mine continues to be a legendary locality, with its specimens remaining highly prized for their unusual morphology and crystal clarity.
