The Boleo mining district in Baja California Sur, Mexico, is a historic copper mining area that was developed in the late 19th century by a French company. The deposits occur in sedimentary rocks and consist of copper rich layers containing minerals such as atacamite, brochantite, and other secondary copper species. The locality is especially famous for boleite, a rare lead silver copper chloride mineral first described from the district. Boleite occurs as deep blue cubic crystals that are highly distinctive and are considered classic specimens from Boleo.
