The Baia Sprie mine, historically known as Felsobanya, located in Maramures County, Romania, is an ancient mining center with records of metal extraction dating back to the Middle Ages. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Neogene volcanic arc of the Eastern Carpathians, where epithermal hydrothermal vein systems cut through volcanic and sedimentary host rocks. These veins were formed by circulating mineral-rich fluids that deposited extensive quantities of copper, lead, zinc, and precious metals. The underground workings are internationally famous among mineral collectors for producing well-crystallized specimens, including fine examples of stibnite, realgar, barite, and various sulfide minerals.
