Breithauptite with Nickelskutterudite

2282104

location:
Cobalt, Ontario, Canada

description:
Metallic masses of breithauptite with nickel skutterudite.

The Cobalt mining camp, located in northeastern Ontario, Canada, is a famous historic silver district that played a foundational role in the development of Canadian hard-rock mining. Geologically, the region features an intricate network of narrow, high-grade native silver and cobalt-nickel arsenide veins controlled by brittle fracture systems within Proterozoic sedimentary rocks of the Coleman Member (Cobalt Group) and underlying Archean volcanic sequences. These mineralized veins are genetically and structurally tied to the intrusion of the massive Proterozoic Nipissing diabase sill, which provided the heat necessary to circulate silver-bearing hydrothermal fluids through the fractured host rocks. Silver was first discovered in the area in 1903 during the construction of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway, sparking an immediate mining boom that rapidly turned the town of Cobalt into one of the largest silver-producing centers in the world. Industrial-scale underground mining and surface open-cut extractions proceeded aggressively under dozens of competing companies, with regional silver production peaking around 1911 before a gradual decline set in during the late 1920s as the richest shallow veins neared exhaustion. While major commercial corporate operations mostly ceased by the mid-twentieth century due to depleting ore reserves and fluctuating metal markets, intermittent processing, tailings reclamation, and small-scale exploration efforts for silver and cobalt have continued at various old workings into the twenty-first century.
