description: The Schneeberg mining district, situated within the Erzgebirge region of Saxony, Germany, is a globally renowned historic mineral locality celebrated for producing spectacular specimens of native bismuth, cobalt-nickel arsenides like skutterudite, and an array of rare secondary uranium minerals. Geologically, this historic deposit is located within a complexly folded sequence of Neoproterozoic to Paleozoic-age metamorphic schists and phyllites that was heavily intruded and fractured by the late-Variscan-age Eibenstock granite pluton. Hydrothermal mineralizing fluids ascended through these highly fractured structural host rocks, precipitating extensive networks of rich mineral veins that exhibit a classic five-element mineral zone assemblage containing silver, bismuth, cobalt, nickel, and arsenic. Historically, organized underground shaft mining began following the initial discovery of rich silver veins in 1470, sparking a massive medieval mining rush that led to the construction of famous mining concessions like the Weisser Hirsch mine. As the shallow silver deposits reached exhaustion in the sixteenth century, the focus of extraction shifted toward cobalt ores for the production of blue smalt pigment, followed by a massive twentieth-century industrial expansion for uranium ore under the Soviet-controlled SAG Wismut company between 1946 and 1958. Following the permanent cessation of all commercial underground extraction in 1958 due to economic exhaustion, the classic shafts were systematically closed. Wilhelm Hoyer (1849-1913) was a prominent German engineer and mineral collector based in Hanover, whose professional work in railway construction and geology facilitated the assembly of a significant mineralogical collection. Geologically, Hoyer was noted for his deep expertise in the Mesozoic formations of northwestern Germany, particularly the Hildesheim area, where he meticulously documented and collected specimens from active quarries and construction sites. His collection was scientifically important for its comprehensive representation of regional minerals and fossils, reflecting the systematic approach of 19th-century European collectors who bridged the gap between industrial mining and academic mineralogy. Historically, Hoyer was active in the latter half of the 1800s and early 1900s, contributing numerous papers to geological societies and maintaining professional ties with major institutions of his era. Following his death, his extensive mineralogical and paleontological holdings were integrated into the collections of the University of Gottingen and the Prussian Geological Survey in Berlin, where they continue to serve as vital reference materials for researchers through 2026.
Thin platy crystals of calcite averaging 1.0 cm in size covering the top of matrix. Very good condition. At one time this was part of the collection of Wilhelm Hoyer and would date to the 19th century. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video.
