A superb slightly translucent lustrous sharp double terminated crystal of calcite on a small amount of matrix. Classic material for this locality, this is in excellent condition. This was collected in the mid 1970s.

The Pugh Quarry, located near Custar in Wood County, Ohio, is a well known dolostone quarry that has produced a wide variety of mineral specimens from Silurian age carbonate rocks. Quarrying operations have exposed numerous vugs and cavities where mineral rich fluids deposited secondary minerals during and after lithification of the host rock. Among the most notable minerals from this locality is calcite, which occurs in a wide range of crystal forms including scalenohedral, rhombohedral, and complex twinned crystals. Calcite from Pugh Quarry is often colorless to white, but may also display shades of yellow or brown, sometimes with excellent transparency and luster. These crystals formed in open spaces where conditions allowed for slow and well developed growth, and specimens from the quarry are highly valued by collectors for their diversity of forms and overall aesthetic quality.
