The Picher mining field in northeastern Oklahoma, part of the Tri State Mining District, was a major producer of lead and zinc from Mississippi Valley type deposits hosted in cherty limestone. Mining began in the early 1900s, with large scale development around 1905, and the district quickly became one of the most important sources of lead and zinc in the United States. Extensive underground workings followed ore bodies formed by mineralizing fluids that deposited sphalerite and galena in fractures and solution openings. In addition to its economic output, the district is well known among collectors for mineral specimens, including twinned calcite crystals that formed in open cavities under favorable conditions. These calcite crystals often display complex twinning and good luster, making them desirable specimens. Mining activity declined in the mid 20th century and effectively ceased by the 1970s, with most operations closed by around 1970 as ore reserves were depleted and economic conditions changed.
