Lustrous translucent sharp rhombohedral crystals of calcite to 1.5 cm on edge covering the top of matrix. In good condition. Mining in Terlingua, Texas centered on rich cinnabar deposits discovered in the late 19th century, making the area one of the leading mercury producing districts in the United States by the early 20th century. Cinnabar, the principal ore of mercury, occurred in hydrothermal veins and replacement deposits hosted in limestone, and was extracted from numerous small underground mines as well as larger operations such as the Chisos Mining Company properties. Production peaked during World War I and World War II when demand for mercury increased for industrial and military uses. After demand declined in the mid 20th century the mines closed, and Terlingua is now known as a historic ghost town and former mercury mining district.
