description: The Copper Falls Mine in Keweenaw County, Michigan, was an early copper mining operation developed in the 1840s to work native copper in fissure veins cutting basalt of the Portage Lake Lava Series. The mine was explored and worked through underground shafts and drifts but never became a major producer compared to nearby mines. Operations were relatively short lived, and the mine closed around 1857.
An unusual large pseudo-cubic colorless opaque and non-lustrous crystal of calcite set up on matrix. This is in terrific condition. Very unusual crystal habit for the species. Collected on October 17, 1995.
