Calcite

specimen number:
2072392

location:
Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico

description:

A thin plate of matrix covered by sparkling colorless to slightly red calcite crystals. A few of the calcite crystals measure to 1.2 cm in size and are transparent.

The Santa Eulalia mining district, located in Chihuahua, Mexico, is one of the worlds most significant carbonate replacement deposits (CRD). Geologically, the district is divided into the West Camp and the East Camp, where hydrothermal fluids replaced Cretaceous limestone with massive sulfide bodies and intricate skarn mineralogy. This process created vast silver, lead, and zinc deposits, along with a diverse array of secondary minerals that are highly prized by collectors. Historically, mining and quarrying activities in Santa Eulalia began in the early 1700s, with the silver riches from these mines directly contributing to the founding and wealth of Chihuahua City. Large-scale industrial operations were formalized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with several mines remaining active for over 300 years. Although production has fluctuated due to economic cycles and local flooding, the district continues to be a major source of metals and mineral specimens as of 2026. The longevity of the Santa Eulalia mines makes them a cornerstone of Mexican mining history and a classic reference locality for the study of polymetallic replacement systems.
