Geologically, the quarry exposes a thick sequence of Middle Devonian-aged carbonate rocks, primarily belonging to the North Vernon Limestone and the underlying Jeffersonville Limestone formations. These sedimentary layers represent ancient, shallow marine environments and consist of highly fossiliferous, durable limestone and dolostone beds that are structurally sound for construction engineering. Commercial quarrying at this specific location commenced in the late 1940s to satisfy regional post-war infrastructure and highway construction demands. The facility has operated continuously for nearly eight decades under various corporate configurations, transitioning into a primary production node for Berry Materials Corporation, and it remains highly active today, supplying massive volumes of aggregate to the southern Indiana regional market.
