Calcite
specimen number:
2102467
location:
York Bldg Supply Co. Quarry, York Co., Pennsylvania, USA
description: Attractive mostly gemmy lustrous scalenohedral crystals of calcite to over 10.0 cm in size on matrix. This is in great condition with very minimal micro-damage present. The York Building Products Company Quarry, located in York County, Pennsylvania, is an active commercial aggregate operation with a long history of supplying crushed stone for regional infrastructure. Geologically, the quarry is situated within the complexly deformed Paleozoic carbonate sequences of the Piedmont province, consisting primarily of folded limestones and marbles. Hydrothermal activity and groundwater circulation through fractures and vugs have facilitated secondary mineral deposition. The site is widely recognized among mineral collectors for producing remarkable specimens of calcite, featuring diverse crystal habits, sharp terminations, and aesthetic forms often coating fracture surfaces or lining cavities within the host rock.
