The Red Cliff Campground area, located south of Big Sky in Gallatin County, Montana, is a well-known regional locality for collecting calcite specimens within the Gallatin National Forest. Geologically, the site is defined by dramatic, towering cliffs of Mississippian-age Madison Limestone, a thick sedimentary rock unit that undergoes localized dissolution from groundwater activity. Over time, meteoric waters moving through the limestone fracture networks created open solution cavities and vugs where calcium carbonate precipitated to form highly lustrous, colorless to pale yellow dogtooth and rhombohedral calcite crystals. While the immediate campground area was never developed into a commercial industrial mine or quarry, localized surface collecting and mineral prospecting along the exposed limestone bluffs and road cuts grew popular during the mid-to-late twentieth century as highway construction and forest service development improved regional access. Today, the locality remains strictly a non-commercial, recreational surface collecting site managed under forestry guidelines, with no active commercial operations.
