description: The Santa Eulalia mining district, located in Chihuahua, Mexico, is a world-class carbonate replacement deposit situated within Cretaceous limestone beds. Formed during the Tertiary period, high-temperature hydrothermal fluids associated with deep-seated igneous intrusions migrated upward along faults, reacting with and replacing the host limestone with massive lead, zinc, and silver sulfides. Historically, mining in the district began in 1705 after Spanish prospectors discovered rich silver outcrops, leading directly to the founding of the nearby city of Chihuahua. Over more than three centuries of continuous production, the district's complex networks of caverns and hydrothermal pockets have produced exceptional collectible mineral specimens.
