The Verkhnii Mine, located in the Dalnegorsk district of Primorsky Krai, Russia, is part of one of the world's premier skarn-type polymetallic ore regions. Historically, commercial mining in the area began in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries to extract substantial reserves of lead, zinc, and boron. Geologically, the deposit is formed within Triassic-Jurassic sedimentary carbonate sequences that were intruded by Late Cretaceous granitic magmas, creating extensive skarn zones through high-temperature contact metasomatism. The underground workings and cavities within these skarns are internationally famous among mineral collectors for producing magnificent crystallized specimens of minerals such as calcite, hedenbergite, ilvaite, quartz, and various sulfides.
