Calcite

specimen number:
2312193

location:
Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia

description:
Slightly pinkish to mostly colorless rhombohedral crystals of calcite measuring to 2.0 cm in size across the front of matrix with minor pyrite. In good condition and brightly fluorescent.

Broken Hill, located in western New South Wales, Australia, has a history defined by one of the world's richest ore deposits. Founded in 1883 after boundary rider Charles Rasp discovered massive mineral outcrops on a jagged hill that gave the town its name, it quickly became the birthplace of the mining giant BHP. Geologically, the Broken Hill ore body is a world-class, deformed Proterozoic-aged sediment-hosted lead-zinc-silver deposit. Formed over 1.8 billion years ago through intense high-grade metamorphism and hydrothermal activity, the region features a complex geological structure that has yielded an extraordinary variety of rare minerals and sustained large-scale mining for over a century.
