Calcite

specimen number:
2312287

location:
Cherokee Co., Kansas, USA

description:
Neat old time specimen from the tri-state District. The specimen consists of a large sharp scalenohedral crystal of semi lustrous calcite, this with a purple interior. In perfect condition all around.

The Picher Field, extending into the Cherokee County portion of southeast Kansas within the Tri-State District, is geologically characterized by Mississippi Valley-type lead and zinc ores. The mineralization primarily consists of galena and sphalerite, hosted within Mississippian-age cherty carbonate rocks that experienced extensive dissolution, brecciation, and hydrothermal dolomitization. Historically, commercial mining in this northern sector of the field began around 1904 following major prospecting breakthroughs. Operations expanded rapidly to supply critical metals for twentieth-century industries and wartime demands, before production ultimately dwindled due to ore depletion and rising economic pressures, leading to the closure of the final local mines around 1970.
