Calcite

specimen number:
2312352

location:
Sasar Mine, Baia Mare, Maramures Co., Romania

description:
Beautiful light pink rhombohedral crystals of calcite are covering the top of matrix. This is in super condition. Incredibly fluorescent under longwave ultraviolet light. Wonderful large cabinet piece.

The Sasar Mine, located in the Baia Mare mining district of Maramures County, Romania, is part of a historic non-ferrous metal extraction region that dates back centuries. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Neogene volcanic chain of the Eastern Carpathians, associated with complex collapse structures, hydrothermal activity, and calc-alkaline magmatism. The mineralogy of the area is characterized by low-sulfidation epithermal vein systems containing rich polymetallic sulfide ores, including pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and copper-bearing minerals, which have made the district internationally renowned for both industrial mining and diverse mineral specimens.
