Calcite

specimen number:
5008100

location:
Anduze Quarry, Ales, Gard, Occitanie, France

description:
Lustrous scalenohedral crystals of translucent calcite across the front of matrix. In good condition, excellent for this locality and species.

The Anduze Quarry, located in the Gard department of southern France, is a significant industrial site situated within a massive geological deposit of Middle Jurassic dolostone. This formation, dating back to the Bajocian and Bathonian stages, consists of thick sedimentary layers that have been utilized for their high magnesium carbonate content. Historically, the site has served as a primary source of industrial stone and aggregate for the region for many decades, with large-scale mechanical extraction becoming particularly intensive during the second half of the 20th century. While it is widely known in the industrial sector for providing crushed rock for major construction and civil engineering projects, the quarry is also recognized for its geological features, including various fractures and dissolution cavities that characterize this specific carbonate environment. It remains a functional and active industrial operation, playing a consistent role in the local economy through the production of high-quality industrial aggregate.
