The Wenshan Prefecture, located in the Yunnan Province of China, is a prolific mineral-producing region famous for its diverse metallic and non-metallic deposits. Geologically, the area is characterized by a complex karst landscape developed within thick sequences of Paleozoic limestone and dolomite. The mineralization is primarily classified as carbonate-hosted replacement or skarn-type deposits, formed where hydrothermal fluids interacted with the carbonate bedrock near igneous intrusions. Historically, small-scale mining for lead, zinc, and tin has occurred for centuries, but the region gained international acclaim in the late 20th and early 21st centuries for its world-class specimens of blue hemimorphite and bright green smithsonite. These minerals formed in the oxidation zones of the ore bodies as groundwater interacted with primary sulfide minerals. While industrial-scale mining for base metals continues in various districts across the prefecture today, Wenshan remains most notable in the geological community as the source of some of the most aesthetically prized secondary zinc minerals ever discovered.
