Kjorholt, located in the Porsgrunn municipality of Telemark, Norway, is home to a massive underground limestone mining operation that began commercial production in 1929 and transitioned to underground extraction methods in 1933. Geologically, the deposit consists of thick Cambro-Silurian sedimentary limestone layers that dip towards the Eidangerfjord, formed in ancient shallow marine environments. Mineralogically, the mine has achieved world-wide renown among collectors for the exceptional calcite crystals discovered within frequent natural vugs and caverns encountered during excavation, yielding flawless, highly transparent, and structurally diverse specimens.
